- Do you need help in caring for your children or in providing care to your elderly or disabled family members?
- Do you prefer trained specialists with medical or pedagogical education?
Do you need your caregiver speaking several languages, including your mother tongue?
- Do you mind if your caregiver lives in you home, does light housekeeping and assists in meal preparation?
Then you need Live-in Caregiver !
A LIVE-IN CAREGIVER PROGRAM has been specially developed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to bring qualified workers to Canada to do live-in work as caregivers when there are not enough Canadians to fill the available positions. An important requirement of LCP is that employees must live in the employer's home while providing care for children, elderly persons or people who have disabilities.
Successful applicants receive a work permit that allows them to work in Canada as live-in caregivers under an Employment Agreement preliminary signed by both parties. The minimum wage is $9.25 (CAD), 8 hours per day. Minimum hours paid per week: 40. In most of the provinces, overtime is paid extra, and program participants will have 8 public holidays (New Years' Day, Labor Day, Good Friday, Thanksgiving Day, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day). The host family will deduct room and board from caregiver’s salary ($350).
An Employment Agreement complies with a provincial labour law and gets approval from the Ministry of Labour Resources of Canada.
If you are not happy with your live-in caregiver, you can terminate the agreement at any time by giving a notice of termination or pay in lieu of notice. LCP participants are allowed to look for other employment as a live-in caregiver. Any live-in caregiver who decides to live out, or who accepts any other type of employment, can be disqualified from the program and deported from the country.
After 2 years of employment, LCP participants have the privilege to apply in Canada - without leaving the country - to become permanent residents.
